What are the Benefits of a Memory Foam Pillow?

Sleep can be as elusive as unicorns.  If you have ever suffered from insomnia, you can sympathize with millions of people all over the world who complain about not sleeping well.  Desperate people will try almost anything to get a good night’s sleep.
One hot button topic at the moment is memory foam.  There are manufacturers who use it to make mattresses and pillows which holds the promise of finally delivering a good night sleep.  Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of a memory foam pillow to judge for ourselves if it is a good investment.
1.        What is memory foam?  Memory foam is a manmade substance called viscoelastic.  It was developed by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in the 1960s for the seats in the missiles.   It is used for its energy absorbance and softness to cushion astronauts during launch and landing.
2.       What does memory foam do?  Memory foam molds to the human providing cushioning and to distribute body weight to prevent injury.  It has been incorporated into helmets, cushions for invalids and even the inside of sneakers to pad boney areas during running and exercise.
3.       How does memory foam pillows aid in good sleep?  First of all, it needs to be pointed out that experts are not really sure if memory foam is superior to other pillow materials.  The expense of conducting such testing can be prohibitive, so little formal testing under laboratory type settings has been completed.  However, there are numerous others who have tested the memory foam pillow and have listed their own findings.
a.        Memory foam pillows mold to the shape of your head and neck, keeping your upper spine in alignment.
b.      Memory foam pillows hold their shape, so there is no need to flip, punch or move your pillow about to find a comfortable position.
c.       Memory foam pillows help to prevent snoring as they hold the head in a position which prevents the tongue from partially occluding the airway during sleep.
d.      Memory foam pillows are available in many different sizes and shapes which can be tailored to each individuals unique sleeping position.
e.      Memory foam prevents muscle strain and cricks in your neck by keeping the head from falling into awkward positions while you sleep.
f.        Memory foam pillows dissipate heat and can help you stay cooler during the night.

These are just a few reasons many people choose memory foam pillows.  Again, it is up to the individual to make informed decisions about the products they choose to purchase.  These products, like so many on today’s market, vary in cost and performance.  It would be advisable to be a smart consumer to compare the different memory foam pillows from different companies before putting your hard earned money into something that will not live up to its claims.  The investment in a good pillow is like investing in sleep.  Some would pay any cost to achieve it.
